How to Build Own Ice Luge out of a Storage Bin

An ice luge, a staple of college parties, is a large block of ice with a carved channel snaking down the length of it. Alcoholic beverages pour down the channel into eager mouths. Avoid the cost of purchasing a luge by making one yourself with a few simple household items.

Things You'll Need

• Storage container ( 2' x 4' x 6")
• Water
• Large freezer
• Chisel or knife
• Measuring cup
• Towels or tarp

Instructions

1. Purchase a storage container with the dimensions 2' x 4' x 6".

2. Fill the container with cool water. Leave an inch between the water level and top of the container.

3. Place the container into the freezer. Prop one end up two inches off the ground to angle the ice.

4. Carve an S-shaped path down the ice. Using a knife or chisel, cut length-wise, roughly 1 inch wide. Center a single luge down the middle. If creating dueling luges, evenly space them down the ice with enough room for two people at the bottom.

5. Remove the ice from the container. Using a measuring cup, pour 2 cups of 110 degrees Fahrenheit water down each luge. Pour over a sink to catch the runoff. The hot water smooths the path and forms the lip. Optionally, you can chisel out a lip and smooth with additional hot water.

Tips & Warnings

• When purchasing a storage container, keep in mind the size of your freezer. The temperature of the hot water does not have to be exact. 110 Fahrenheit is the typical peak of hot tap water. After creating the luge, place it back in the freezer until ready for use. Line the luge area with towels or a tarp to prevent water damage.

• Always observe the legal drinking age. When in use, make sure the luge is secure to avoid slipping.
