How to Paint Kitchen Hardware
Painting kitchen hardware, such as cabinet door handles, is simple, but it involves more than painting. Make sure you have all of your materials before beginning, and follow the proper steps. Once you start this project, it will be over and done before you know it.
Things You'll Need
- Bucket
- Hot water
- Ammonia cleaner
- Kitchen hardware
- Rubber gloves
- Scrub brush
- Sandpaper
- Cloth towel
- Newspaper
- Styrofoam blocks
- Screwdriver
- Spray primer
- Spray paint
Instructions
-
Remove and Clean the Hardware
-
1
Unscrew the kitchen hardware from its cabinet door, and remove the screws from the hardware itself.
-
2
Combine hot water and ammonia-based cleaner in your bucket, then drop the hardware in for about 5 minutes.
-
-
3
Put on your rubber gloves, reach into the bucket, and pull out the hardware. Using your scrub brush and sandpaper, continue to brush any grime or buildup off of each piece of hardware.
Rinse off the ammonia solution with hot water from your sink's faucet.
-
4
Lay out your cloth towel and let the hardware pieces sit until fully dry.
Painting the Hardware
-
5
Lay out the sheets of newspaper and place the Styrofoam blocks on them.
-
6
Put the screws back into the hardware, and push each screw backing into the Styrofoam blocks to hold the hardware while you paint it. The hardware should be facing upward.
-
7
Spray the hardware with primer and allow it to dry. The primer acts as a sticking agent so the paint adheres to the hardware with no problems or peeling.
-
8
Spray the hardware with your chosen paint. Spray one light coat over each piece, allow it dry, then spray another coat.
Adding several light coats of paint allows the paint to dry evenly and prevents paint buildup. You do not want globs of paint drying on your hardware, and you do not want the hardware to peak through the paint.
-
9
Allow the hardware to dry completely, then screw it back into the cabinets. Project complete!

Tips & Warnings
Rather than using paint, you can also use a polish to add extra shine and some additional color.
