How to Remove a Setup Password on a Gateway Laptop

A "setup password" is a password that you must enter to log into a user account on your Gateway laptop. This can be beneficial if you have a number of people using the same computer and don't want just anyone having access to your personal files. But if you are the sole user of your Gateway laptop, then it can be more of a hindrance. As all Gateway laptop computers run a version of the Windows operating system, you can remove the setup password by accessing the Windows Control Panel.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click on the "Start" menu.

    • 2

Select the option that reads "Control Panel." If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7, this will have its own listing in the "Start" menu. If you're running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows XP, this will be found under the "Settings" sub menu.

    • 3

Double click on the icon that reads "User Accounts."

    • 4

Click on the name of the account that has a setup password that you want to remove.

    • 5

Click on the "Remove my Password" option.

    • 6

Enter your current password into the appropriately labeled box.

    • 7

      Click the "Remove Password" option.

    • 8

Click "OK" to save your changes and exit the "User Accounts" utility. The setup password will have been removed from your account, and you will be no longer prompted to enter it when you boot up your computer.
