How to Twist Hair to Create Dreads
When beginning dreadlocks, you have several options for this unique hairstyle. Twists work well with kinky hair when growing dreadlocks because twists are usually able to hold their style with minimal care. Twists also work on curly hair, but may take longer to form dreadlocks than kinkier hair. You can twist your hair to begin locks yourself or have a professional locktician do it for you. How to Twist Hair to Create Dreads

Decide what size you want your eventual dreadlocks to be. This determines the size of the sections you make when initially creating parts all over the head.

Create even sections with the tail of the rat tail comb. These sections can be square or diamond shaped. You may find it easier to start at the back of your head and work your way toward the front.

Take a section of hair and divide it in two. Begin twisting these two strands together from the root all the way to the ends.

Use rubber bands to hold these twists at the base of each section if your hair is very short or easy to unravel.

Continue twisting two strands in each section over the entire head.
How to Comb Twist to Create Dreads

Part hair into small sections with the tail end of the comb, as above.

Apply a small amount of lightweight hair gel to the hair and comb through this section thoroughly to remove all tangles.

Hold the tail end of the rat tail comb vertically at the root of this section and twist the hair around the end of the comb in one direction.

Continue twisting until the entire section of hair has been twisted around the comb and then slide the comb out of the twist.

Repeat these steps over the entire head for a good starter dreadlocks style.

Tips & Warnings
Snap-free rubber bands are gentler on your hair and less likely to break the hair than regular rubber bands. Shampoo hair gently when you're beginning dreadlocks. Too much rubbing will loosen your hair and require additional twisting. As your hair grows, twist new growth at the roots in the same direction as your twisted hair to incorporate it into budding dreadlocks.
Don't make your dreadlock sections too small when first starting them. Locks that are too skinny can eventually break off from the weight of long hair. Avoid using beeswax on your hair. It's very heavy and tacky and difficult to wash out.

I had been wearning kinky twist and then yarn braids to get mt hair natural with a new growth and I finally got my hair to that stage, so I cut the braids out because they hd locked to my natural hair a my new growth was ready, about 2 months ago I went to a african and they stated it by twisting my hair and I am visiting them every 2 weeks to keep my hair up and I feel my hir is not locking, there are some that are tight and they are some that are loose and my hair gros relly fast looking tacky please tell me wht I can I do because I m a very neat person and I don't like the wild look with them all over my head is it because they are trying to grow an dshort or I need to just take them out., I keep hearing that to strt off they are hard to keep very high maintance, so what I am asking for is some advice and guideance on wht to do and with them already started can I start twisting them myself and wht is a good product I can use at home to keep them in a hard also after they put the gel or hold they sparyed sprtiz and put me under the dryer is that the correct way to do this. thank you and plese give me some feed back on the right way.
