How to Disinfect the Washers at a Laundromat

Because Laundromats are open to the public, it's hard to tell just how sanitary their washing machines are. Not all Laundromats are properly maintained, and touching and using unsanitary surfaces in them could expose you to viruses such as the flu or a cold. Disinfecting the washers and dryers yourself before use is the best way to know that the appliances are clean and sanitary. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Disinfectant cleaner
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Aerosol disinfectant
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Clean washcloths

      Mix a disinfectant cleaner with warm water in a spray bottle. Carry this, chlorine bleach and a bottle of aerosol disinfectant with you to the laundromat, as well as a few clean wash cloths.

      Clean the inside and outside of the washer and dryer with the mix of water and disinfectant cleaner. Use a washcloth to gently scrub the side walls, under the lids and on the outside of the washer and dryer.

      Fill the washer all the way with hot water. Pour 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach into the filled washer. Run a wash cycle with the water and bleach in the washer. Do not place your clothes in the washer yet.

      Spray an aerosol disinfectant into the washer after it has finished washing with the water and bleach solution. Spray inside of the dryer as well.
