Step 1
Find a picture of Elmo's face. Coloring books are great places to look. Choose a picture that will be easy to trace.
-
Step 2
Place a piece of wax paper over the picture. Tape the wax paper and the picture together, and make sure that they will not move on a flat surface. Trace Elmo's face.
-
Step 3
Spray the wax paper with vegetable oil spray before applying the icing. Use black icing in a pastry bag to trace Elmo's face lightly. Try not to make the icing too thick or it will look uneven on the cake.
-
Step 4
Carefully pick up the wax paper. Turn the wax paper over on the cake. Lightly press on the paper to make the icing stick to the cake.
-
Step 5
Remove the wax paper, and Elmo's face will be on the cake. Use black icing to fix any part of the outline that might not have transferred.
-
Step 6
Decorate Elmo's face. Use red icing for his face, orange for his nose, white for his eyes, and black for his mouth.
-
Step 1
Use a pastry brush to spread the vegetable shortening on your Wilton Elmo cake pan. Make sure to cover all the areas of the Wilton cake pan with the shortening.
-
Step 2
Sprinkle flour on the cake pan. The flour will prevent the cake from sticking. Turn the pan upside down, and add more shortening and flour if any of the pan still shows through.
-
Step 3
Prepare the cake batter according to the box. Once the batter is finished, pour it evenly into the cake pan. Bake the cake at the recommended time and temperature.
-
Step 4
Allow the cake to cool. Place the cake in the refrigerator for 1 hour to ensure that the cake completely cools. Remove the cake with a spatula and a cake board. Place the cake board directly on top of the cake, and flip the cake right onto the cake board. Lay the cake onto a cake platter.
-
Step 5
Use the appropriate colored icings to decorate the cake. Set all the icing and decorating materials out on the counter. Cover the cake loosely with foil. Leave the cake in the refrigerator until it is ready to serve.
