How to Keep Armadillos Out of Flower Beds

Armadillos are a burrowing animal, which can prove quite the nuisance around a home. While they pose little direct threat to humans, armadillos' tendency to construct large underground dens can prove dangerous as they can weaken the ground beneath foundations, and can greatly damage your garden by removing soil beneath your flowers. By fencing off your flower bed, you can keep armadillos from digging beneath your flowers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a trench around the exterior of your flower bed, eighteen- inches deep and eighteen-inches wide.

    • 2

Cut out swatches of wire mesh, 54-inches tall, and with enough total length to wrap around the entire ditch.

    • 3

Cut enough wooden stakes so that one can be spaced every two to three feet around the entire trench.

    • 4

Staple the wire mesh to the tops of the stakes. Align the top of the meshing with the top of the stakes, and use a staple every six inches for the top 36 inches of mesh and stake, leaving you with six inches of stake and eighteen inches of mesh unstapled.

    • 5

Bend the eighteen inches of mesh remaining out away from the stakes at a 90-degree angle.

    • 6

Place the fencing into the trench, and hammer the remaining six inches of stake into the ground.

    • 7

Refill the trench, and reseed if desired.
