1
Determine the approximate weight of the item the anchor will support.
-
2
Purchase anchors with a weight rating slightly greater than the weight of the item you plan to hang. For large items necessitating more than one anchor, simply divide the weight of the item by the number of required anchors to determine the proper weight rating.

3
Using the drill bit size listed on the anchor packaging, drill a hole through the drywall where you'll install each anchor.
-
4
Insert plastic anchors fully into the drilled hole. A properly inserted anchor will fit snugly with no space between the shoulder of the anchor and the wall. Put the supplied screw in the embedded anchor and turn it clockwise with a screwdriver to expand the anchor. You can first place the screw through item you plan to mount, or loop a wire hanger over the screw.

5
Fold the wings on wing-type hollow wall anchors, and push through the drilled hole. The wings will open inside the wall, preventing the removal of this type of anchor. Extremely strong, these anchors will support a lot of weight. Use this style for heavy items such as glass mirrors, shelf supports and other heavy items. You will not be able to remove the screw in this type of anchor after you've inserted it through the wall, necessitating the attachment of the anchor to the item prior to installing to the wall.
