The pool pump is the most important part of a swimming pool's filtration system. The pool pump is responsible for pumping the water through the filter and back into the pool. When the pool pump breaks, cracks and begins to leak or the motor dies you will need to replace the pool pump. Replacement of the pool pump can get expensive just for the unit, so it's best to try to install it yourself rather than paying a pool company to install it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase a new pool pump that is the same horsepower as the pump you are replacing.

  2. Step 2

Unplug the pool filter from the electrical outlet used to power the pump.

  3. Step 3

Close the water valve on the pool skimmer and the pool pump so when you disconnect the pump, the pool does not lose excess water.

  4. Step 4

Use a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp at the pump end of the pool hose that connects the skimmer to the pool filter. Use the screwdriver to do the same for the pool hose that connects the pool pump to the pool filter. Some newer models have a union between the pool pump and pool filter, if your system is equipped with just a union, use a wrench to detach the pump from the filter.

  5. Step 5

Remove the old pool pump from the pool system and replace it with a new pool pump. Be sure the pool pump sits on level ground. Use a leveling tool to be sure its level and use concrete blocks to create a level area if needed.

  6. Step 6

Connect the pool hose from the skimmer to the new pool pump and tighten the hose clamp with a screwdriver. Connect the pool hose from the filter to the pool pump and also tighten the hose clamp. If your pool system is equipped with a connecting unit from the pool pump to the pool filter, simply tighten the connector with a wrench.

  7. Step 7

Plug the new pool pump into an electrical outlet. Your new pool pump is now ready for priming and use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to dry your hands completely before plugging the new pool pump into an electrical outlet to avoid electrical shock.
