How to Calculate Yards of Topsoil Needed
Topsoil is the most fertile part of the soil that covers the ground. The amount of top soil you need depends on what you plan on growing in your yard. For grass, you only need 4 to 6 inches of topsoil, but for vegetable gardens you should have between 8 and 12 inches of topsoil because of the deeper root structure. Does this Spark an idea?

-
2
Determine how thick the layer of topsoil you need. If the measurement is in inches, divide by 36 to get the number yards deep of topsoil you need. For example, if you only need nine inches of top soil, divide by 36 to get 0.25 yards.
-
-
3
Multiple the length by the width by the depth to get the volume of topsoil in cubic yards. For example, if the yard is 8 yards long and 6 yards wide and 0.25 yards deep, the volume of topsoil you need is 12 cubic yards.
