How to Apply Vinyl Lettering Boat Numbers
Boat registration numbers are just like the license plates on your car: they provide a way to identify your boat as yours. Like your license plate, the numbers don't "expire" every year, but a new yearly registration must be obtained; a new "year" sticker must be affixed near the numbers. The placement of the registration numbers is mandated by state law--some states require them on both sides of the bow (the front of the boat), some only on one side for certain types of craft. All you have to do is make sure that they are the required size and are aligned properly.

1
Clean the surface that you're applying the numbers to. Use a mild soap, like dish soap, to remove all surface oil and dirt. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely.
-
2
Use the measuring tape to measure downward 6 inches from the point of the bow. Make a chalk mark on the stem, the knife-like edge of the hull. Measure 48 inches toward the stern (rear) of the boat and make another chalk mark 6 inches below the gunwale (the top edge of the hull). Connect the two chalk marks by taping a piece of sting on the forward chalk mark with masking tape. Pull the string tight, then tape the other end of the string on the rear chalk mark.

Put a short piece of clear tape on the top of each number. Tape the numbers to the hull in the correct order just above the string. This string will provide a straight edge to align the bottom edge of the numbers. Use this opportunity to make changes in the order of the numbers, or to move them farther apart or closer together.

4
Remove the backing from the first number by folding one corner backward, then forward to loosen the backing. Set the number in place using the string as a guide. Repeat for each number in order, one at a time, until the numbers are all applied.
-
5
Repeat the entire process for the other side of the boat.

Tips & Warnings
Your yearly registration sticker must be placed in the location specified by the state. Your number must read from left to right on both sides of the hull.
Once vinyl numbers are applied, they are very difficult to remove. Be certain of your alignment before finally applying a number to the hull.
