How to Sew a Cord Cover

Cords snaking across tabletops from lamps and other electronics don't just look unattractive, they also have a tendency to become tangled and create an eyesore under desks and other furniture. Organize them and make them more visually pleasing by sewing electrical cord covers from fabric. Choose fabrics that blend into the wall color or use colors and designs that complement your décor. Even swag light chains are easily made more attractive with a fabric cover.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your cord. Double the measurement for a pleated cord cover or add 6 inches to the length for a flat cover. Use this measurement for the length of your fabric.

    • 2

Measure the width of the plug then double the measurement and add 1 inch. Use this measurement for the width of your fabric.

    • 3

Cut out a fabric strip to the measurements you took. Choose woven fabric over knit and thinner fabrics instead of heavy ones that are difficult to work with.

    • 4

Fold over 1 inch of fabric on each each short end so the wrong side of the fabric is touching, then pin in place. Sew across the top of the folded fabric to hem the ends.

    • 5

Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise with right sides touching. Sew up the side to make a tube.

    • 6

Turn the fabric tube right side out. Slide it over the plug and up the cord to the base of the item.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap a rubber band around the top of the cover near the base of the lamp or electronic item to secure the cover. On pleated covers the rubber band won't be visible. Special tools for turning fabric tubing right side out are available at sewing stores, or you can use a ruler or pencil to push the fabric right side out.

  • Make sure the fabric does not enter the plug with prongs, as this is a fire danger. Make the tube extra wide if it will be covering several cords or a bulky chain-covered cord.
