How to Use a Ti83 Calculator

Texas Instruments, or TI for short, is an American manufacturer of computer and semiconductor technology. Part of the TI line of scientific calculators, the Ti83 allows users to graph functions and carry out data plotting analysis. Graphing calculators such as the Ti83 are sometimes for beginners to navigate. Familiarize yourself with the correct way to use your Ti83's basic features before using it for the first time to complete an assignment or take a test.

      Hit the "On" button to activate the calculator. Use this button whenever you wish to stop an ongoing calculation. The busy indicator---a moving horizontal line at the corner of the screen---will be visible during an ongoing calculation.

      Keep in mind that pressing the "2nd" key allows you to access the second function of the next key you hit. The second function is written in yellow letters above each key. The "Alpha" key provides access to the alpha function, which allows you to type letters. The alpha function is written in green above each key.

      Press "Enter" to perform a calculation. Use this key as you would the "=" button on a non-scientific calculator.

      Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to previous calculations still displayed on the screen. Doing so will allow you to edit the previous calculations.

      Hit "Clear" to delete the information currently appearing on the home screen, which is where calculations are visible. An entry will appear on the left side of the home screen, while its answer will appear on the right side of the following line. To access the home screen at any time, press the "2nd"and "Mode" buttons.

      Enter a number in scientific notation by typing the digit or expression that precedes the exponent. Press the "2nd" and "," buttons. "E" will appear on the screen following the digit or expression as a result. Hit "(-)". Finish by entering the one or two digit exponent.

      Graph functions on your Ti83 by hitting the "Y=" button. Enter a function, for example "x+2" and press the "Graph" button. View the possible solutions for the function's variables by hitting the "2nd" and "Graph" buttons, which will bring up a table of function values. Alternatively, hit the "Trace" button and use the arrow keys to move along the function. As you do so, consult the bottom of the screen for the function values corresponding to the cursor's current position.

      Adjust the brightness of the screen. Hit the "2nd" key. Press and hold down the up arrow key, which darkens the screens, or the down arrow key, which lightens the screen. The calculator will save your most current settings each time you turn it off.

      Press the "2nd" and "ON" buttons, which will turn the Ti83 off when you have finished working with the calculator.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the accompanying cable to connect the Ti83 to another calculator or a computer. Doing so will allow you to transfer data from one device to the other.
