A typical laptop configuration would include a video output that is DVI, or digital video interface. Thus, a HDMI-to-DVI cable is necessary to connect your laptop to television.

Things You'll Need:

  • HDMI-to-DVI cable
  1. Step 1

Insert the HDMI connector of the cable into the HDMI port of your television. The port is labeled "HDMI IN" and is located either on the back or the side panel of the TV.

  2. Step 2

Plug the DVI connector of the cable into the 29 pin DVI port, which is typically located on the side panel of the laptop.

  3. Step 3

Change the television channel to the HDMI channel using the remote control. You might need to refer to your TV manual for instructions.

  4. Step 4

Log in to a user account in Windows XP or Vista and right-click on your desktop. In Windows Vista, choose "Personalize." In Windows XP, click on "Properties."

  5. Step 5

Click on "Display Settings." Two square icons reading "1" and "2" will appear.

  6. Step 6

Click on the icon "2" and check the box that reads "Extend the desktop onto this monitor." Click "OK." The laptop desktop will appear on your television.
