How to Determine the Authenticity of a Hitchcock Chair
The Hitchcock Chair Company manufactured wood chairs and other furniture for over 100 years. The company was started in 1818 in Connecticut by Lambert Hitchcock and went out of business in the mid-19th century. In 1946 the company was reestablished and stayed in business until 2006. Many imitation Hitchcock chairs are around due to the demand of original Hitchcock chairs, so check any chair carefully to make sure it is authentic. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Look on the chair for the signature of the company: "L. Hitchcock, Hitchcocks-ville, Conn. Warranted." The signature is often found on the back of the base part of the seat.
-
2
Check the color and feel of the signature. The lettering is stenciled onto the chair using a bronze powder that is held on by the finishing coat of the chair. The signature should have a slightly rough texture caused by the powder. The signature is not engraved or painted onto the chair.

Review the chair's Certificate of Authenticity and compare it to the sample certificate on the Hitchcock Chair Company website (see Resources). The certificate is included with each Hitchcock manufactured chair.
