If you lose the BIOS password of a desktop computer, the solution is simple--remove the battery backup for the BIOS and your password is deleted. Unfortunately, in the case of the Toshiba Tecra M2 laptop, the solution is not that simple. Toshiba has the BIOS loaded in an EEPROM device that stores the BIOS data even when the battery is removed. You have no option but to take it to an authorized service professional.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Proof of purchase
  1. Step 1

Locate a Toshiba Authorized Service Professional (ASP) in your locality. You may have to contact Toshiba support to find out the nearest ASP.

  2. Step 2

Take your Tecra M2 to the ASP. Hand over the proof of purchase to the ASP to prove your ownership. The ASP may be authorized to erase the contents of the BIOS and bring it to a known state without any password.

  3. Step 3

Inquire from the ASP whether the service will be free of charge. Some Toshiba laptops have this problem -- the laptop suddenly asks for a BIOS password. If your laptop is one such model, the ASP will delete the BIOS password free of charge. Otherwise, you need to pay a small fee (typically around $30) for the service.

  4. Step 4

Collect you laptop at the time specified by the ASP. Press the "Power" button. Your laptop should boot up without asking for a BIOS password.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are several forums online where battery removal is advocated. Don't try this as it will not be of any use.
