How to Peel the Paper From a Birch Tree
For centuries the paper from birch trees has been used to decorate everything from candles and crafts to collecting and storing food. Native American tribesman lined their canoes and wigwams with the paper to add extra weatherproofing. The paper birch is a sensitive tree, so you need to be careful when peeling the bark away to avoid damaging the tree.

1
Find paper birch trees that have already started to peel their bark. Paper birches have white bark with tan lining interspersed throughout and naturally peel their bark. If you are searching in the forest or on land that is not yours, make sure you get permission from the landowner before you begin collecting bark.
-
2
Search the ground for pieces of bark that have already fallen and collect them to use for your crafts and other projects. You also may consider seeking out dead and fallen trees to collect bark from.

3
Inspect the paper birch tree for pieces of loose bark that have already started to peel.
-
4
Gently grasp the loose end and tug it away from the tree. Tug softly, to avoid tearing the bark in your hands, as dry bark may crumble or easily rip. Pull away as many layers as you need.
-
5
Avoid peeling away fresh bark as paper birches tend to be sensitive trees, and pulling off new bark could damage or even kill the tree.
