How to Replace a Zune Battery

As the original generation of Microsoft Zune units begins to age, it is normal that they begin to experience decreased battery life. Replacement Zune batteries are readily available, and knowing how to replace the battery yourself can prevent you from paying a large bill to a repair person.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flat plastic or metal tool
  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Replacement battery
  • Locate the dock connector on the bottom of the Zune. Use the flat tool to pry away the plastic piece around the dock connector. This will reveal two small Phillips head screws.

  • Unscrew both screws on the bottom of the Zune.

  • Insert the flat tool into the seam between the two plastic halves of the Zune, and twist slightly to create a small opening. Continue moving the tool along the seam and twisting to separate the halves. Avoid the area near the headphone jack. Pull the Zune apart once it is completely loosened.

  • Turn the unit over. You should see a small rectangular object with a long ribbon cable extending across the unit. This is the battery. Find the end of the ribbon cable. Push up on the small plastic tab holding the cable in place, then lift the cable out of the port.

  • Lift the battery away from the Zune. It might require careful prying if it is glued in place.

  • Place the new battery inside the Zune, in the same orientation as the old battery. Extend the ribbon cable across the unit, push it into the port, and push the plastic tab down to lock it in place.

  • Push the two plastic halves of the Zune together, being careful not to crimp any of the ribbon cables.

  • Replace the two screws on either side of the dock connector and push the plastic cover back into place.

  • Charge the new Zune battery fully before using it.
