Use your thoughts to make the right choices

People are going to start treating sugary drinks and other foods that are bad for you with the same techniques that are used to warn against cigarettes and other tobacco products -- with shocking and graphic tactics that are really meant to make you think. That's what an article on PsychologyToday.com reports.

This begs the question: Can we use these tactics at home to help us stay on the right track and develop healthy habits? I think so. Use these tips to help you "scare yourself skinny" at home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a clear bag and fill it with 1 lb. of butter or lard and put it in the refrigerator where you can see it. That is what 1 lb. of excess fat looks like inside of your body. Can you imagine what the bag would look like if you had a lot of weight to lose?

  2. Step 2

If the Body Worlds exhibit passes through your area you should check it out. This is a display that has real cadavers displaying the human body and includes bodies that were afflicted with certain conditions such as cancer and obesity. Seeing what the inside of an overweight human being looks like could shock you into eating healthy.

  3. Step 3

Post pictures of unhealthy and overweight people on the refrigerator and on the cupboard. Seeing these images can help you make the right food choices when it's time to have a meal.

  4. Step 4

In an effort to keep things positive, also post pictures on your refrigerator and cupboards of people whose physiques you admire. This may also inspire you to make proper food choices.

  5. Step 5

Instead of weighing yourself constantly, use the "Zipper Rule" to measure your weight. Choose a pair of jeans that you love. Do they fit? Or are they too tight or too loose? This is a good benchmark of whether you are on the right track or not. If you have some weight to lose, purchase a new pair of pants in the size that you aspire to.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn how to associate healthy foods with an increased level of health--and junk foods as promoting disease and obesity.
  • Make sure to visit your doctor before starting a diet and exercise plan.
