This recipe tells how to make a sour cream cake from scratch. These types of cake can take longer to make than those from a box, yet they taste much better.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Gather and measure out the sour cream cake ingredients:

    1 cup of vegetable shortening
    3 cups of sugar
    6 eggs, separated
    3 cups of all-purpose flour
    1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
    1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
    1 cup of diary sour cream
    frosting of choice

  2. Step 2

    Sift the flour and baking soda together thoroughly, then set aside.

  3. Step 3

    Cream the vegetable shortening and sugar together.

  4. Step 4

    Slowly add one egg yolk in at a time, mixing thoroughly after each one.

  5. Step 5

    Add in the sour cream.

  6. Step 6

    Add the flour mixture in three equal parts. Mix after each addition.

  7. Step 7

    Beat the egg whites until they become stiff. Peaks will form.

  8. Step 8

    Mix into the cake batter.

  9. Step 9

    Pour the cake batter into a tube pan, and bake for about 1 hr and 1/2 at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  10. Step 10

    Ice or glaze with your favorite frosting.
