During times like these, we have to re-evaluate every aspect of our lives including how we spend our "free-time". Is "free-time" really FREE? Not usually, when we sit down to think about it. However, fun does not have to cost a lot of money. This article will provide tips on how to save money and still have fun with your friends and family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A change in mindset that fun doesn't have to cost a lot of money.
  • Friends and family to share with.
  1. Step 1

Think creatively! If you're having difficulty coming up with ideas on your own, gather your friends or family members together and brainstorm. No idea is a bad one, just some may be better than others. It also could be that a "lesser" idea may just have to be tweaked a bit to make it more fun, feasible, etc. Have someone take notes so that no ideas get lost or forgotten.

  2. Step 2

Schedule activities at different locations every week (or to whatever frequency you wish). This allows everyone an opportunity to share their space and does not put too much pressure on the same individual/family for every get-together. Also, some activities may not be available at all locations. For example, one family member has a pool, another a video game console, or one location is more calming, has more space, etc.

  3. Step 3

Instead of spending a lot on meals either eating out or ordering in, why not cook something as PART of the get-together? Have each person attending bring either an ingredient to a specific dish, or bring a topping for a homemade pizza. How about bringing a side dish or a dessert? You could even turn this into an idea in itself by turning your meal into a "cooking class" taught by one of your attendees!

  4. Step 4

Keep in mind that restaurants and bars often charge an over-inflated price for beverages (even soda)! We can often buy a six-pack for what some restaurants charge for one drink. If money is tighter than usual, have each person bring their own beverage of choice, or, if you decide on "mixed drinks", have attendees bring one part of the drink (i.e. host provides alcohol, attendee brings mixer, another attendee brings the garnish).

  5. Step 5

Exercise can also be considered a "group" activity! Whether you get together for walks, bike rides, or some other activity, it gives you an opportunity to discuss your week and get healthy all at the same time. Look for physical activities that may be offered through your Homeowners Association or new local business owners that may offer free or low cost sessions.

  6. Step 6

If you're having an all female group, instead of spending money at the salon for a pedicure, throw a "pedicure party"! Whether you choose to paint each others toes or do your own, it not only saves you money, but again, allows you to spend quality time with those you cherish.

  7. Step 7

A cup of coffee doesn't have to cost $4.00 or more to be enjoyable! There are plenty of wonderful coffee's/teas that are available. Start a "coffee or tea" club and try a different one every week! You can even make it more interesting by making your coffee or tea, putting it in a thermos and take your club to a nearby park!

  8. Step 8

Have a "puzzle party"! Have each member donate $3-5 to purchase a puzzle. Then, when you get together, you can spend the time watching a movie or talking and catching up while putting together the puzzle of the week/month/6 months/year! You might want to keep it at a friend's place who doesn't have as much traffic (such as children or pets) so that your puzzle stays intact during get-togethers at other people's locations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Invite others so that your group can grow. Remember, not all members will be able to make it all the time. It also allows you an opportunity to catch-up with others that you may not see as often.
  • Have fun and ENJOY each other!
  • You may want to schedule one "special" event a month that may require members to save for it (a night out).
