Removing the Clog
-
1
Remove the drain cover. Some drain covers are unattached and can simply be lifted out of the drain. Others may be screwed in and require a screwdriver to detach the cover from the drain.
-
2
Clear any hair, soap or visible debris from the drain area. Sometimes this is the source of the clog, so watch to see if the tub begins to drain.

3
Untwist the wire coat hanger carefully until it is elongated if the water is still stagnant or draining slowly. Insert the hanger into the drain and attempt to fish out any debris. Sometimes this will remove the clog, and sometimes it will push the clog through, so watch to see if the tub is draining.

Remove the wire and get the plunger if the drain is still clogged. Before plunging, block the overflow plate with a rag. Place the cup of the plunger over the drain, forming a seal. Push the stick downward into the cup to create pressure and pump several times. This can push the clog through the pipes in the same way that plungers unclog toilets. You may need to repeat this step several times.

5
Use a chemical clog remover if the water is still not moving or is still draining slowly. Products like Drano or Liquid Plumr can dissolve the clog inside your drain. These products are caustic, so before wear rubber gloves and protective goggles while using them, and follow the manufacturer's instructions in order to prevent injury. Typically, these products can be poured directly into the drain, and after a specified period of time, must be flushed with hot water. Usually this will destroy the clog.

6
Try a plumbing snake. If the clog still persists, savvy amateur plumbers can usually maneuver a plumbing snake through the pipes without damaging them. However, this type of work is usually recommended for a professional. If you do not feel comfortable attempting this, call your local plumber.
