Keeping firewood outside is generally the best place to store it since there is usually more room outside than inside your home. The downside to keeping firewood outdoors is that it is susceptible to sun, wind, rain, snow and sleet--all those outdoor elements that can decrease the quality of the firewood. If firewood is not covered properly, it may not burn efficiently. In the end, you may find yourself wasting a lot of firewood.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Firewood
  • Metal Rack
  • Tarp
  • 2-to-5-pound weights

    Keeping Firewood Dry

  1. Step 1

Stack firewood on a metal rack in an area where the sun will warm it. The rack will keep the firewood off the ground, avoiding moisture and the sun will aid in drying out the wood.

  2. Step 2

Place a large tarp over the wood pile. This is important on snowy or rainy days.

  3. Step 3

Place weights on each corner of the tarp. This should keep the tarp secure and prevent it from blowing away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep firewood stacked off the ground to allow air to circulate underneath it. Keeping firewood in a storage shed is another way to keep it covered.
  • Make sure firewood is stacked securely before covering it.
