Creating custom shaped chocolates requires the use of chocolate molds. Store-bought molds are generally made of plastic or silicone rubber material deemed food safe by the FDA. Finding the perfect pre-made chocolate mold for your needs can be difficult. Fortunately, there is a simple way to craft your own chocolate molds with a food grade silicone molding putty.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Object to serve as model for mold
  • Hot water
  • Soap
  • Towel
  • Food safe molding putty
  1. Step 1

Choose an object to use as a model for the mold. If you wanted to create dog bone shaped chocolates, for instance, then you would use a dog bone of the appropriate size as your model.

  2. Step 2

Clean the model object thoroughly with hot, soapy water to kill any existing germs. Dry the model with a clean towel.

  3. Step 3

Mix the two components of the molding putty according to the package directions.

  4. Step 4

Shape the putty into a square or rectangle larger than the model you have chosen.

  5. Step 5

Press the model into the putty and leave it there for at least one hour.

  6. Step 6

Push up on the bottom of the model through the now dry putty to pop the object out of your new chocolate mold.

Tips & Warnings
  • Several brands of molding putty are available and can be purchased on the Internet. Make sure that the type of molding putty you buy is food safe before you use it to create chocolate molds. You can use a variety of materials in your custom-made molds in addition to chocolate. Try using butter, fondant, cheese or marzipan.
