Making beaded Christmas ornaments using Styrofoam balls is a great way to decorate your home or tree with original decorations and get your children involved in holiday decorating. The ornaments also make great gifts. This project is a beaded ornament with a Christmas tree design on the sides.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Styrofoam balls (4 inch diameter)
  • Straight pins
  • Seed Beads in red, white, green, yellow and brown (size 10/0 in packages of 100)
  • Ribbon
  1. Step 1

Take your 4-inch Styrofoam ball and plan your pattern. If desired, the pattern can be drawn-very lightly-on the Styrofoam ball with a pencil. Do not stick the pencil into the ball; it will ruin the integrity of the ball. Separate your seed beads by color and lay your straight pins out next to your ball.

  2. Step 2

Use the brown beads to create a tree trunk. Make sure to create a perfect square: four beads by four beads. It does not matter where you start on the ball.

  3. Step 3

Build your Christmas tree from the trunk up. The first row should be 12 green beads across. The second should be 10 beads across, centered above the 12 beads. To add "ornaments" to your tree, place a random red bead every so often on the tree.

  4. Step 4

At the top of your tree, make a yellow cross using five beads. Put three yellow beads in a line from the top of the tree and add a bead on each side of the middle bead.

  5. Step 5

Using the white beads, fill up the rest of the ornament with a white background-or leave the rest of the ball blank. If you do not like white, you can use red for a bolder look. If you wish, you can create additional Christmas trees spaced evenly around the ball to create a pattern.

  6. Step 6

Use a small piece of ribbon (4 to 5 inches in length) to make a loop. Using a straight pin, push the two ends of the ribbon into the ball at its top. Use the ribbon to hang the ornament on the tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • To create a new look, use leftover craft supplies. You can use ribbon, brocade, lace and scraps of fabric in place of, or in addition to beads. Wrap the ball with the fabric using a finger nail file to press the edges into the Styrofoam. Overlay the ribbon, lace or brocade to add layers of color. Accent with beads.
  • There is a thing as too much layering. Limit your craft to three items of layering to make sure your ornament does not look overdone. If your children make ornaments, label them with the year made and the child's name to create a keepsake for the future.
