There are many types of bikini tops out there, each with its specific techniques for construction. Start off with a top that looks good on just about anyone and is relatively easy to construct. The triangle bikini top is a classic and is a piece that shows up on racks year after year. In fashion, this almost never happens.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Swimwear pattern
  • Spandex or lycra fabric (they are one and the same)
  • Spandex drawstring
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Small safety pin
  • Notions
  • Fabric glue (optional)

    Hot Tops

  1. Step 1

Measure your bust at the widest width and record your measurements. Use the measurements on the pattern as a guide to determine your size. Read all the instructions included in your pattern bag. Cut out the pattern pieces.

  2. Step 2

Lay your fabric out flat. Pin the pattern pieces to your fabric. Cut your fabric out, staying as close to the pattern paper as possible.

  3. Step 3

Sew the seams on the bottoms of your pieces, allowing room for the drawstring. Sew along the edges as well. Use a small seam to create a tidy look. Secure two strings to the tops of each triangle with a pin. Make sure they are exactly the same size. Cut them to the necessary length (use personal preference, as some people like them long in the back and some like them shorter). Sew your strings on tight.

  4. Step 4

Thread the drawstring through the seams on the bottom of the triangle pieces. Be sure that the triangles face the same way when you thread. Use a small safety pin on one end of the string and use that to fish it through the seam. Tack down the loose edges where the seams open, but be sure not to sew the seam shut---you want the drawstring to be able to move freely. Tie little knots at the ends of the draw string so it won't ever come out.

  5. Step 5

Add decorative details to create a custom look. Add little flowers or use fabric glue to add gems. Use buttons at the tips of the triangle where the straps meet . Make it you. Try it on and adjust it to fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use thicker straps at the tops of the triangles if you have a bigger bust size. The same goes for the bottom---just adjust your seam allowance to make space for a thicker drawstring.
  • If you can see through your top, sew another layer into the inside of the triangle or add some cups.
