1
Cut a piece of white or beige butcher paper to create the handmade birthday banner, or use tape to join sheets of 12-by-12-inch cardstock until you reach the desired length. If the butcher paper is thin, affix two or three layers together with double-sided tape so the sign will be strong enough to withstand the weight of the candy.

2
Choose candy bars with names that you can work into your birthday message---you can use markers or stickers to block out a portion of the name if necessary. For example, Starburst can become "star" or "burst," Fun Dip can turn into "fun" and Snickers can become "snicker."

3
Write the personalized birthday message across the poster with markers, leaving empty spaces where you'll affix the candy. If one sentence reads, "Baby, I love you," leave a blank spot where you'll attach a Baby Ruth candy bar with the "Ruth" covered by heart stickers to create the word "baby."

4
Use double-sided tape to affix the candy in the correct places on the birthday sign. The tape is strong enough to hold the heavy candy bars and won't seep through the candy wrappers like liquid glue might.

5
Add a sentimental touch to the sign by attaching photos and handwritten notes from friends in the empty spots around the birthday message. Use double-sided tape to attach candid images of birthday honoree on vacation, at home, at previous birthday celebrations, participating in sports or favorite pastimes or sharing a laugh with a group of family and friends.

6
Sign the poster beneath the birthday message and add an "XOXO" after it by drawing each "X" and using Hershey's Kisses for each "O."

Tips & Warnings
If the recipient of the candy birthday message wants to eat the candy on the poster but leave the overall message intact, simply use scissors or a craft knife to slice one side of each wrapper open to retrieve the candy. Take the candy bars out of the wrappers before presenting the birthday sign ,if the weight of the candy is causing the poster to sag, fall down or tear when you try to hang it.
Use color copies or duplicates of photos if you're attaching them to the birthday sign with permanent adhesives since you won't be able to remove them from the sign without tearing the pictures. Remove all of the candy and ensure the wrappers are free of crumbs and residue if you plan to store the birthday message sign for posterity to avoid attracting ants or other household pests.
