Green algae seems to blossom in above ground pools in a matter of hours. A pool that was sparkling clean the day before can become green and slimy overnight. Maintaining the proper chemical balance in your pool is the best way to prevent algae from forming, but sometimes factors such as the weather come into play, and the water is off-balance before you're even aware. Removing green algae from your pool is a fairly simple process with the right products.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool brush
  • Chlorine-based pool shock
  • Pool test strips
  • Algaecide
  1. Step 1

Brush the sides and bottom of the pool to loosen the algae.

  2. Step 2

Shock the pool with a commercial chlorine-based shock product. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application according to your pool size.

  3. Step 3

Run the pool's filtering system for 24 hours. Brush the sides and bottom of the pool every four to six hours, if possible, during the 24-hour period.

  4. Step 4

Test the pool water with commercial test strips to determine if the water is properly balanced. Your local pool supply company will also test the water if you bring in a sample.

  5. Step 5

Treat the pool weekly with a commercial algaecide to help prevent algae from forming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Warmer climates promote more rapid algae growth. To help combat algae growth, run your pool's filtering system one hour a day per every 10 degrees of temperature.
