Grease on white clothing can leave a bad stain if you don't wash it properly. Before you throw the clothing in the wash, or even throw it in the sink to soak with detergent and water, you should pretreat the garment to help dissolve the grease. Fortunately, your white clothing can be saved with simple, readily available household products.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper towels or rags
  • Degreasing dishwashing liquid
  • Hot water
  • Sponge
  • Laundry detergent with bleach
  1. Step 1

Place the clothing on a table or other solid surface. Place paper towels beneath the grease spot to protect the surface from the grease and cleaning materials.

  2. Step 2

Pour degreasing liquid dish detergent directly on the grease. You'll probably need at least a teaspoon of dish detergent, but you may need more--it depends on the size of the grease spot.

  3. Step 3

Dampen a paper towel in hot water and wipe up as much grease from the clothing as you can. Then dampen a sponge in hot water and scrub the grease spot with the sponge. Rinse the sponge frequently under warm running water to remove excess grease; otherwise, you are merely smearing the grease around the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Hold the clothing under a faucet and rinse the greasy spot under warm water. Next, fill the sink with warm water (or hot water if the fabric can handle it). Add the article of clothing and a tablespoon of liquid dish detergent. Allow the clothing to soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Machine wash the clothing in warm water. Use a detergent with bleach for best results. You may need to send the clothing through more than one wash cycle to completely remove the grease. Hang the clothing to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a toothbrush to scrub small grease spots.
  • Silk and wool will need special care--try soaking up grease and oil on delicate fabrics with cornstarch rather than washing them in hot water or using dish detergent. Both may be saved with professional dry cleaning.
