How to Calibrate a Non-Removable Humidor Hygrometer

In order to keep your cigars fresh, maintain a consistent humidity level of 68 to 72 percent within your humidor. You'll need to calibrate your hygrometer to ensure it's accurate. While the salt test is a quick and simple way of performing calibration, it requires that you remove the hygrometer and place it in a bag. Calibrating a non-removable hygrometer is equally simple, but requires a separate unit for proper calibration.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase or borrow a digital hygrometer. Digital hygrometers are more accurate than their analog counterparts and can be used to calibrate the analog one. Digital hygrometers can be found for modest prices. Digital hygrometers claim that they don't require calibration, but test it to ensure accuracy.

    • 2

Place a teaspoon of salt into a small dish or cap such as that from a soda bottle. Moisten the salt with several drops of water. Do not soak or dissolve, but just allow the salt to get moistened all the way through.

    • 3

Place the salt mixture and the hygrometer in a sealed plastic bag or container, taking care not to spill on the hygrometer. Fully seal the bag and allow it to sit for 6 to 12 hours.

    • 4

Read the hygrometer. It should be at exactly 75 percent. If it is not, adjust it to 75 percent, if possible, or simply take note of the amount that it's off by and add/subtract this when using it.

    • 5

Place the hygrometer in your prepared humidor. Close the lid and leave it in for 6 hours or more.

    • 6

Compare the reading on the digital hygrometer with that of the analog hygrometer. If the analog hygrometer is adjustable (it should have a screw or knob on the back), adjust it to the same reading as the digital one. Your analog hygrometer will now be accurate. If the analog hygrometer is not adjustable, you can either make note of the amount by which it's off and add/subtract that in the future or use the digital hygrometer in its place.
