Whether you are religious or just like animals, a Noah's Ark cake can add a whimsical touch to a child's party. This sweet version of Noah and his animal companions will help keep the fun afloat.
Things You'll Need
- 2 sheet cakes
- Blue icing
- Chocolate icing
- Jellied candies
- Royal icing
- Red and black licorice
Choose a flavor for the cake. Keep it as simple as possible to keep the focus of the cake on the elaborate decoration. Chocolate, vanilla or strawberry works well.
Bake two standard sheet cakes. One will form the base of the cake, and the other will form the top of Noah's Ark.
Cover half of the base in blue icing to look like water. Push the icing into scalloped pattern to resemble waves.
Cover the second half of the base of the cake with chocolate icing. Run a fork along the sides of the icing to look like the wood of Noah's Ark. Add in swirls to make the icing look like it has knotholes.
Cut out the second layer of the cake into a square. Place the square on the chocolate-covered side of the cake's base to form the ark's cabin. Cover the square in a lighter brown icing to create contrast between the cabin and the rest of the ark. Cut out a small hole in the middle of the cabin. Fill in the hole with clear jellied candies to create a window.
Make several sets of animals for Noah's Ark from fondant. Shape pairs of elephants, giraffes, dogs and horses. If you are not an experienced cake decorator, aim for simple shapes. A long rolled-out piece of fondant can serve as the neck of an animal. You can also cut the fondant in half and only make the head of the animal rather than the entire body.
Make Noah and his wife. Sculpt shapes of human figures from fondant. Give them clothing in a color that contrasts with the rest of the ark, such as red or green. Place a figure at either end of the cabin.
Create a gangplank for the animals to exit the ark. For this, use a cut-out piece of cake, and cover it with the same icing you used to create the ark's cabin. Attach it to the side of the cake with a bit of royal icing. Make rails for the gangplank out of strips of red and black licorice.
