1
Buy a set of coordinating blank cards and envelopes to create the first birthday party invitations. Choose a color that coordinates with the decorations you plan to use for the festivities.
-
2
Choose two pictures to adorn the front of the invitations---one current image and one of your child as a newborn. Consider taking a picture of your child sitting next to the same object or sitting in the same spot as he was in the newborn photo to show how much he's grown.
-
-
3
Use a home photo printer or a local photo lab to reduce the two photos so they'll fit side by side on the front of the invitation. Use the same printer or photo lab to make enough copies of the reduced photos for the remaining invitations.
-
4
Position the two pictures 1/2 inch from the top of the card to leave room on the bottom of the invitation for text. Center the images and affix them side by side with double-stick tape.
-
5
Create a "line" under the photos using tiny buttons, ribbon or themed stickers like baby bottles, baby footprints or birthday cakes featuring a single candle.
-
6
Measure the remaining space beneath the line with a ruler and use the measurements to create a text box in a word processing program. Type four dated lines of text---your baby's birthdate followed by the words "Baby's birthday;" two additional dates followed by their corresponding milestones like first smile, first word or first time sleeping through the night; and the date of the party followed by the words "Baby's first birthday party."
-
7
Output the text on cardstock that coordinates with the card base. Trim the text boxes with scissors or a paper trimmer and attach them to the bottom of the cards with double-stick tape.
-
8
Print the party information on pieces of cardstock to affix inside the cards with double-stick tape. Include the day, date, time, location and the RSVP contact phone number and preferred date for the responses.

Tips & Warnings
If you have extra time and want to save money, consider making your own card bases out of inexpensive cardstock. Fold in half an 8.5-by-11 inch sheet of cardstock the long or the short way. Measure it against the envelope to draw a cut line with a pencil. Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut out the card before embellishing.
