How to Tune Drums With a Drum Dial
Drum tuning can be one of the more frustrating aspects of being a drummer. Even the most seasoned drummer can have trouble getting the right sound. The Drum Dial will not automatically perfect your sound, but it will make sure your drum's tuning lugs are tightened evenly. Having your drum in tune with itself makes getting the right tone much easier.
Instructions

Tuning the Drum
-
1
Set the drum on a flat surface.
-
2
Use the drum key to remove tuning lugs completely and remove the hoop.
-
-
3
If replacing the drumhead, remove the old drumhead and ensure the new head is sitting evenly on the drum. If keeping the old drumhead, just ensure it's sitting evenly on the drum.
-
4
Replace the hoop and tuning lugs. Ensure the tuning lugs are just finger tight.
-
5
Ensure the Drum Dial is zeroed. The needle should indicate zero when the Drum Dial is placed on a flat glass service. If it does not, unlock the bezel and adjust the needle accordingly.
-
6
Use the Drum Dial Edge Gage to set the drum dial ¾ of an inch from the rim. The Drum Dial should be aligned with the lug you're tuning with the dial facing you.
-
7
Keep your hands off the drumhead and use the drum key to slightly adjust the tuning lug.
-
8
Read the pressure using the large needle. Move the Drum Dial to the next lug and repeat step seven.
-
9
Only turn each lug a little at a time. Repeat steps six to nine until all lugs are tuned evenly. When all lugs read the same tension, the drum is in tune with itself.
-
10
To change the drum's tone, continue tuning each lug a little at a time. Be sure all lugs read the same tension when finished.
-
11
Repeat all steps for the opposite side of drum.

Tips & Warnings
Standard tension readings: 75 for batter head, 74 for resonant head. Snare drums should be tighter (85 for batter head, and 82 for resonant head). Bass drums should be looser (72 for batter head, 70 for resonant head). These are only general guidelines. Experiment with the drums in your kit to find what sounds best. Have a friend play your drums while you stand several feet away to get a better feel for your set's sound.
The Drum Dial is an extremely sensitive piece of equipment. Keep it inside the protective foam case provided when not in use. Keep the case on a level surface.
