If you fly out of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport, you know how long the security line can be. There is a lot that you the traveler can do to shorten the time that you and your fellow travelers spend in that line. Follow these tips the next time you fly out of Atlanta and get through security without a glitch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ID
  • Boarding Pass
  1. Step 1

Pack light. Don’t pack an outfit for each day; instead pack items that will let you mix-and-match. Mixing and matching skirts, shirts, pants and blouses will make you appear to have on a new outfit each day. Utilize the laundry service when traveling. Hand wash undergarments and let dry in hotel room.

  2. Step 2

Pack lotions, toothpaste, perfume and other liquids and gel products in your checked baggage. If you’re not checking your luggage, then purchase these items in travel size packages sold by your local pharmacies and grocery stores. Place them in a quart size plastic see-through Ziploc bag and store it in the outer compartment of your carry on luggage where it can be reached quickly and sent through the security scanner.

  3. Step 3

Wear an outfit that does not require a belt. Wear shoes that can be slipped off quickly and easily. If you have on sneakers, start loosening the strings before you get to the scanning area. Empty your pocket of all keys and coins. Put them in your purse or carry on luggage. You can also place them in the bin for screening.

  4. Step 4

Remove belts, earrings, bracelets and any other metal from your body. Remove outer garments such as coats, sweaters or jackets and stuff them in your carry on luggage. Remove your laptop. Take out your government issued ID and boarding pass for the checkpoint TSA agent. Once they have checked your ID against your boarding pass, put the ID back in your wallet or purse but keep the boarding pass out for the screening agent.

  5. Step 5

Place the laptop in a screening bin by itself. Place coins and keys, shoes, jacket, belt, jewelry and any other outer garment previously removed in a separate security checkpoint bin. Keep your boarding pass in your hand. Keep your eye on the screening agent. When they motion for you to proceed through the screening machine, step forward, hand or show the agent your boarding pass and proceed as directed.

  6. Step 6

Collect your belongings, and move away from the scanning area to re-dress. Atlanta security is set up with metal benches outside the scanning area for you to sit and put on your shoes and repack the items previously removed for scanning. Doing this at the scanning belt holds up fellow travelers.

Follow these tips and I guarantee you'll make it through Atlanta's airport security quickly and without a glitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throw away any soda pop, coffee, water or liquids before attempting to go through security. It will not be allowed if greater than 3 ozs and not in a plastic quart-sized bag. Liquids and gels purchased in Duty Free can only be transported in checked luggage.
  • Items that you are required to remove from your person or carryon may differ from airport to airport. Just read the signs as you approach the screening area and you’ll usually get a heads up on what to do.
  • Some international airport screening agents may request that you turn your camera, phone or laptop on to show that it is not a decoy so have good batteries when taking these items through security.
