Hush puppies are very popular in the Southern US. Very commonly served with breaded catfish fillets, coleslaw and fries. It's a deep fried bread. Soft and moist on the inside, crisp and crunchy on the outside. Surely not a healthy food, but sure does taste great.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare and measure out the ingredients for the hush puppies:
    2 cups of corn meal
    1 egg beaten
    1 small onion, finely chopped
    1 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of sugar, that is if you like your bread sweet.

  2. Step 2

Mix the corn meal, sugar (optional) and onion in a bowl.

  3. Step 3

Stir in the milk and eggs. Mix well.

  4. Step 4

Drop out by heaping teaspoonfuls into hot oil. Best to use a deep fryer.

  5. Step 5

Fry until the outside becomes golden brown. Don't make your hush puppies too large or the outsides will get down before the outsides. If this happens, make the hush puppies smaller, or turn down the fryer heat.

  6. Step 6

Remove the hush puppies from the deep fryer, and drain excess grease on a paper towel or fry basket.
