How to Make Hush Puppies from Scratch

Hush puppies are very popular in the Southern United States. They are commonly served with breaded catfish fillets, coleslaw and fries. It's a deep-fried bread, soft and moist on the inside, crisp and crunchy on the outside. Surely not a healthy food, but it does taste great. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 2 cups of corn meal
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 tbsp. sugar, if you like your bread sweet

Instructions

      Mix the corn meal, sugar (optional) and onion in a bowl.

      Stir in the milk and eggs. Mix well.

      Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls into hot oil. It's best to use a deep fryer. Don't make your hush puppies too large or the outsides will be done before the outsides. If this happens, make the hush puppies smaller, or turn down the fryer heat.

      Fry until the outside becomes golden brown.

      Remove the hush puppies from the deep fryer, and drain excess grease on a paper towel or fry basket.
