How to Stage Your Home in the Fall

Historically home sales slow down in the fall as people start thinking more about the holidays and less about buying homes. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up hope that your home will sell, you just have to make sure your home stands out from the rest of the homes on the market. You can use the following techniques to stage your home so that it looks its very best during the fall season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean every inch of your home inside and out until it shines. Reach into those corners that you usually skip in your normal cleaning routine, shine the fixtures and steam clean the carpets. You want the people who come into your house to feel like it has been well taken care of.

  2. Step 2

Remove the clutter from your home and rearrange the furniture to improve the flow of traffic. In the kitchen, organize the cabinets, clean out the drawers and clear off your counters and tables. In the bedrooms and bathrooms, clear off the counters and dressers, hang up the clothes and store your toiletries in a container with a lid. Have your kids sort through their toys, take their posters off the walls and make their beds everyday. Pack up your extra stuff and store it neatly in the garage or rent a storage unit.

  3. Step 3

Keeping your yard looking neat is particularly challenging if you are trying to sell your home in the fall. Keep the leaves raked up and your walkway swept clean. Keep the gutters clean and make sure they drain properly. You may have to do this everyday if you have a lot of trees. Prune your trees and bushes and keep your grass mowed if it is still growing.

  4. Step 4

Spruce up your landscaping and keep it fresh looking as the weather begins to cool. Remove any dying plants and faded flowers. If the weather is still warm, plant fall annuals like mums to add color and curb appeal. If the weather is too cold for mums, plant cold tolerant flowers and plants like pansies.

  5. Step 5

Take advantage of seasonal decorations to dress up your home. Hang a fall wreath on your door and place a decorative bowl of small pumpkins or gourds on the table. Use scented candles or potpourri to add a subtle spiced pumpkin or apple pie fragrance to your home. Keep your decorations simple, however, you want the focus to be on your home, not your decorating style.
