Scabies or Sarcoptes Scabiei are a tiny mite that lives on the warmth and blood provided by a human body. They are quite contagious and can be very bothersome, though not life threatening. This article will tell you how to recognize a scabie infection by appearance and symptoms, as well as how to get rid of them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first way to identify a scabie is to educate yourself on this tiny mite. Contrary to popular opinion, a scabie infection is not caused by filth. It is caused by direct skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies. Rarely will a person get infected off sharing a towel or clothes with a person who is infected. Scabies affect people world wide and are very common.

  2. Step 2
Check for lines of blisters and itching.

The second way to identify a scabie infection is to know what an infection looks like. It can take up to six weeks for symptoms to occur. When scabies infect a person, they burrow their little eight-legged bodies into the skin and burrow under the skin. The burrows appear as lines of blisters on the skin. These burrowed lines form a rash that is easily recognizable by medical personnel.

  3. Step 3

The third way to identify a scabie infection is to know what the infection will feel like. Scabies cause a person to itch like crazy. They are most active at night so an infected person will be tormented when trying to sleep by intense itching and possibly will not even be able to sleep.

  4. Step 4
Ointment is used to stop the infection.

Finally, if you have the symptoms listed above, you should get to see a doctor so he can help you get rid of the infection. Your doctor will prescribe an ointment containing 5% permethrin, lindane, or crotamiton to treat your infection. You will need to follow the directions and apply the ointment as directed for several weeks. The itching will continue for a couple of weeks but will then slowly cease.
