How to Hook an Xbox 360 to a PC

The Xbox 360 is not only a powerful gaming console--it's also a capable media device. Microsoft designed the Xbox 360 to be compatible with PCs that have the proper software, such as Windows Media Player 11. When the devices are successfully connected, the Xbox 360 can access music, video and photo files from the PC. Windows Media Player 11 is available as a free download on Microsoft's website.

Download Windows Media Player 11 if it is not already installed on your computer. See the Resources section for the download location.

    • 2

Attach one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port in the back of the Xbox 360 and the other end to an Ethernet port on your PC. You can also attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to your home network hub, if applicable, instead of directly into the PC.

Power on the PC and Xbox 360. On the PC, click "Start," "Settings" and "Network Connections." Verify that your Xbox 360 is connected to your PC by checking the "LAN" connection's status. "Connected" indicates that the devices are communicating properly.

Open Windows Media Player 11 on your PC and click on "media sharing." Check the box that says "Share my media."

    • 5

Click on the Xbox icon that appears, then select "Allow," located below the Xbox icon. You can now stream music, video and photos from your PC to your Xbox 360.
