How to Obtain a Sound Card Driver

Whether you managed to install your new sound card into your computer or reinstalled Windows, your sound will not work without your sound card's drivers. A driver is a piece of software that tells Windows how to use your sound card. If you want to get sound working on your computer, you need to find and install a driver. Fortunately, a sound card driver is easy to obtain.

      Check the box your sound card came in if you bought your sound card separately from your computer. Find the CD that includes the sound driver.
      Check the CDs that came with your computer if your sound card came with the computer. Find the one with the drivers; you'll find the sound driver on it.

      Check the website of the company that built your computer or the company that makes your sound drive for drivers. Both host drivers for your sound card. Search for your model of computer or sound card.

      Install the drivers. If the driver came in the form of an executable file, then download the file and follow the on-screen instructions. If the driver came in the form of an .inf file, it must be installed through the Windows device manager. Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and click "Properties." Click the "Hardware" tab, then click "Device Manager." This brings up a window that shows you all the hardware on your computer. An alert icon beside your sound driver informs you that drivers are not installed. Right-click your sound card, then click "Update Driver." This brings up the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to install your driver.
