How to Use Skype Over a Web Client

Any computer with access to the Internet can be called a web client. When coupled with Skype communications software, you are able to chat and make calls to anyone in the world right from your web client. This includes a home PC or your business office. With the addition of a hands-free headset, making calls with Skype is an efficient option for those who like to take notes as they speak.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the Skype website and click "Download" to find the most recent version of Skype. Download the install file onto your computer by clicking the available link. When the program is done downloading, install Skype by double clicking on the file and following the on-screen directions.

    • 2

Start up Skype by clicking on the desktop icon or the link in your Start menu. Click the link for "Don't Have a Skype Name" to create a new account. Fill out your personal information and choose a unique username and password. Once you've created an account, you can sign in using this information.

    • 3

Hook a headset to your computer. This will allow you to speak to anyone using Skype. Headsets are better than classic microphones as they allow you to speak to someone while keeping both hands free. Wear the headset during all calls that involve voice communication.

    • 4

Enter a Skype username to speak to someone for free. Ask your friends or business contacts for their Skype contact information or use the search function to find someone new. You can also enter a phone number for a land line or cell phone by clicking on the "Call Phones" button in the panel on the left side of the screen.

    • 5

Click the green button that says "Call" in order to start phoning your contact. Skype will work just like a real phone. After your conversation, click the red button that says "End Call." This will terminate the conversation just as if you hung up a real phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the Skype window is closed, the program is minimized into your taskbar so that you can still receive phone calls. Right-click on the icon and choose "Quit" to close it completely.

  • Skype can also be used for video and text chatting.

  • While Skype-to-Skype chatting and phone calls are free, it costs money to call land line or cell phones both locally and internationally.
