How To Decorate on Top of a Jelly Cabinet

Jelly cabinets, often called cupboards, are a popular storage item. These short, narrow cupboards are thought to have been created by the Amish as a place to store canned goods. They became more popular as more people started canning fruits and vegetables. Jelly cabinets average about 4-feet tall and 2-feet wide. Today they are often used outside the kitchen, such as a small linen closet in a bathroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Plan a theme for the top of the cabinet. While you can haphazardly throw decorative items up there, it will just look messy and cluttered if there is not a unifying theme. Themes can be seasonal, such as an autumn arrangement, or in a style that matches the rest of your home, such as Americana. You can also display a collection.

    • 2

Work from the middle to the sides. Place your tallest item in the middle of the cabinet. For example, place a decorative plate in the middle on a plate stand. Then, put smaller items on either side of the item. In the case of the plate, maybe some matching mugs or teacups. If you are using your cabinet in a living room or bedroom, you could use a small lamp as the center item.

    • 3

Add something to trail down the sides of the jelly cabinet. This draws the eye down and connects the top of the cabinet to the rest of it. For example, a plant with trailing ivy would look terrific and add a bit of color. You could also use a table runner on top of the cabinet and let the ends of it trail down the sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change the decor of your cabinet to match the seasons. This freshens up the look of your cabinet. You don't have to remove everything; simply add a few details such as a strand of white lights at Christmas or some small gourds during Thanksgiving.

  • Note that jelly cabinets are usually rustic and country in design, so very modern decorations will not compliment the look of the cabinet.
