Water heaters come in two types that use electricity or gas to heat the water in the tank. The type of water heater you need will depend on the type of connection available for the water heater. Natural gas is the most common source, but propane can be used as well.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Pipe wrench
  • Dolly
  1. Step 1

Measure the height of your current water heater. A water heater that is the same size will not require any changes to the gas line.

  2. Step 2

Turn off or disconnect the gas line to the water heater. Use a pipe wrench to loosen the fitting or connection to the gas line on the water heater.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the water supply to the water heater. Use the pipe wrench to disconnect the water pipe from the water heater.

  4. Step 4

Drain the water from your old water heater before attempting to move it. The water will be hot; turn off the unit a couple of hours before it is moved.

  5. Step 5

Move the old heater on a dolly to make room for the new one.

  6. Step 6

Place your new propane water heater in the same location as the old one.

  7. Step 7

Connect the gas lines to the water heater and use a pipe wrench to make sure the fittings are tight.

  8. Step 8

Connect the water line or pipe to the water heater. Use a pipe wrench to tighten the fitting to prevent it from leaking.

  9. Step 9

Set the water temperature on the water heater to 120 degrees F.

  10. Step 10

Turn on the water supply so that the heater can fill with water.

  11. Step 11

Turn on the gas and check for any leaks before turning on the unit.

  12. Step 12

Turn on the water heater to see if it is working properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a licensed plumber install gas lines if you are converting from an electrical to a propane water heater.
  • The inlets and outlets on the new water heater may not match the configuration of your existing pipes. Vents may be required by code for a gas or propane water heater.
