Things You'll Need:
- Coffee beans
- Coffee grinder
- Percolator
- Oxygen-bleached filters
- Bottled or filtered water
-
Step 1
Purchase coffee beans in small batches, no more than you can use in two weeks. The best and freshest beans can be found either in small local roasters or online. Many boutique coffee companies have a Web presence, and will ship their beans out the same day that they are roasted.
-
Step 2
Grind only enough beans for one pot of coffee at a time. As soon as the bean is ground, it begins to lose flavor. Grinding beans immediately before brewing ensures the freshest and best coffee flavor.
-
Step 3
Place an oxygen-bleached coffee filter in the percolator basket. Oxygen-bleached filters don't add any aftertaste to the coffee. Filters are used even if your coffee basket has a very fine mesh, as they will catch any stray grounds or sludge that may slip through into your pot. Spoon two tablespoons of coffee grounds for every cup of water that you will use. That's 8-ounce cup, not coffee cup.
-
Step 4
Fill the pot with bottled water or water that has been filtered in a pitcher. For best tasting coffee, never use tap water. Plug in the percolator, or put on the stove over medium heat. Allow to perk until the coffee is a dark and rich brown.
