How to Install a Powervent Water Heater
-
1
Turn off the water and gas supply to the old water heater. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and allow all the water from the old tank to drain. Depending on where your water heater is located, you may want to have a long enough hose to have the hose out a window so the water goes outside.
-
2
Disconnect the gas and water lines. There are two types of lines you may have. If the gas and water lines are threaded pipes, disconnect them at the union. If the lines are copper tubing, cut the copper tubing with a utility knife.

3
Remove the exhaust vent from the top of the water heater. Once the water has been drained, remove the water heater from its location.
-
4
Place the new Powervent Water Heater into place and make sure it's level using a leveling tool. If the water heater is not level, use concrete blocks to level it.
-
5
Use Teflon tape to wrap the water heater trap fittings. Attach the blue coded fitting to the cold-water inlet. Attach the red coded fitting to the hot water outlet of the tank. The cold-water inlet has an arrow pointing towards the tank and the hot water outlet has an arrow pointing away from the tank.

6
Reattach the hot and cold water lines to the new Powervent water heater. If you had to cut your copper tubing, you will need two couplers to join them back together again and solder the couples to the copper. If you have threaded pipes, simply reconnect the union.
-
7
Reconnect the gas line to the Powervent water heater. Turn the gas line and water back on and check for any water leaks.
-
8
Remove the burner access panel and light the pilot. You may have to refer to the Powevent's owner's manual for proper lighting of the pilot. Adjust the water temperature of the water heater to your desired temperature.
