How to Hunt With a Pellet Rifle
A pellet gun is a ranged weapon that propels projectiles (pellets) at a target through the discharge of stored or compressed air. Hunting with a pellet gun presents a significant challenge to the hunter, as pellet guns lack the range and total force of a conventional firearm. For these reasons, pellet guns are a common weapon of choice for hunters seeking smaller game and pests.

1
Read all of the manufacturer's safety information about your pellet gun and familiarize yourself with the weapon before hunting. Treat the pellet gun like any other firearm; never point it at anything you don't want to harm, and wear eye protection at all times.
-
2
Know your local regulations before hunting. Some states or counties limit the types of prey you may hunt with a pellet gun. Other locations require a special license or impose specified "open season" periods for hunters using pellet guns. Check with your local wildlife or outdoor recreation authority for applicable regulations.

3
Shoot only at appropriate targets. Although it is technically possible to kill a moose with a pellet gun, it is not likely unless you are a seasoned expert. Hunters often use pellet guns to seek rabbits, birds, vermin or comparable-size prey.
-
4
Use a scope. Because pellet guns lack the power of a regular gun, accuracy is essential. A scope will dramatically increase your chances of hitting your target.
-
5
Select the proper type of ammunition. Pellets come in several different sizes (calibers). Smaller pellets will require more accurate "kill shots" to bring down your prey. Larger pellets allow more leeway with regard to targeting and cause more internal damage. As a general rule, the size of the pellet increases with the size of the target.
-
6
Locate your prey. Approach the target quietly until you reach an effective range, taking care not to alert the animal. Consult your pellet gun's manual for the weapon's effective range.
-
7
Fix your gun's sight or scope on your target. Exhale to stabilize your hold on the weapon and gently squeeze the trigger.

Tips & Warnings
Carry a backup weapon. You never know what you will encounter when you are out in the wild. If you stumble upon a bear, your pellet gun will probably not do much good. Know your environment and be prepared.
