How to Exit a Lap Pool

Lap swimming is a fun way to get your daily exercise and spend time in your community. Since many people use lap pools for exercise, be sure you follow lap pool etiquette when exiting the pool. First and foremost, pay attention to other swimmers and be respectful of their practice. A head-on collision or painful fall will mar your experience. Mind your personal safety and the safety of others in the pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Swim to the shallow end of the lane. Locate the stairs or ladders at the shallow end of the pool.

    • 2

Do not attempt to exit the pool in the middle of the lane. This can be disruptive to other swimmers and is dangerous for your health.

    • 3

Wait until other swimmers have left the end of the lane. Swimmers are running in cycles and may stop at the end of the lane to rest.

    • 4

Use the stairs or ladder to climb out of the pool. Do not attempt to hoist yourself up onto the edge of the pool. If you fall, you can hurt yourself and other swimmers.

    • 5

Take a moment to situate. The stairs may be slippery and it is helpful to anchor your feet onto each stair before climbing onto the next one. Be careful.

    • 6

Once you have exited the lap pool, gather all of your belongings and leave the complex. Do not walk through tile hallways or stairs with wet feet. This is hazardous to other patrons who may slip and fall. Use your towel to dry off before leaving.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear water shoes when swimming to lessen the chance of falling.

  • Always pay attention to the lifeguards' cues. They may ask everyone to exit the pool at a particular time, which may necessitate waiting in line to use the exit ladder.
