How to Cook Soy Meat
Soy is frequently used in products that are designed to mimic the taste and texture of meat. These products can help people transition from a meat-based diet to a vegetarian or vegan diet. Popular types of soy meat include veggie burgers, hot dogs and "chicken" nuggets. Another popular item is a soy-based product that is similar in color, texture and taste to ground hamburger and sausage, which can be turned into "meatloaf" or cooked into casseroles. One of the advantages of using soy-based products is that they cook very quickly. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Do not thaw before using. Unlike meat, frozen soy products do not have to be thawed before cooking. Burgers or nuggets can be placed straight from the freezer right into the pan or oven for cooking. Ground meat-style products are generally sold unfrozen so that they are easier to work with.

2
Pan fry soy meat in a little oil or butter. Soy meat products taste better when they have a little bit of crispness to them. True, you can easily microwave a veggie burger or hot dog and call it done, but the end result will be more appealing if you spend more time in the preparation.

Create a soy meat loaf. Mix a ground meat alternative with a combination of spices, cooked lentils or rice, grated carrot, minced onions and celery and form the mixture into a loaf pan. Slather with a topping of tomato sauce and a little molasses and pop in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes for a healthy alternative to an American classic.

4
Combine the sausage-style soy meat with onions, pepper, garlic and tomato sauce and cook in a saucepan to make a spicy Sloppy Joe sandwich. You can also use variations of this mixture on homemade pizzas, stuffed into pita bread or baked into a pasta dish and served topped with cheese.

5
Bake a meat pie. Shepherd's pie is a comforting meal during the winter months. Saute soy meat with onions, garlic, carrots and peas and place in a homemade or store-bought pie crust and top with mashed potatoes. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes have browned.
-
6
Grill soy meat on the barbecue. Oil the grill slightly, just as you would with regular meat, and place on the rack when the coals have heated. Because soy meat does not have fat in it, the burgers have a tendency to stick more than regular hamburgers, but you can remedy that by keeping an eye on them and flipping them frequently.

7
Check the date on your product. Just because soy meat isn't a true meat doesn't mean it can't spoil. Follow proper food handling procedures when cooking all of your meals for safe and nutritious cooking.
