How to Write on Wire Tag Labels

Wire tags usually consist of both the actual label or write-on surface and a loop that attaches around the wire or cable the label pertains to. Wire tags may be used to mark store inventory for sale or as an anti-theft measure, to help reduce confusion at a cluttered office workstation, or to bundle cables discreetly out of the way for aesthetic or safety (trip hazard) reasons. It's usually easier to write on the wire tag label first, then attach the tag to the wire after, if possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Locate the write-on area of the tag; on rigid plastic tags this will be obvious, as it is the only flat surface. With flexible colored tags, the write-on surface is usually white, and also feels a little bit rougher to the touch than the otherwise glossy tag.

Make sure you know exactly what you're going to write on the label; you won't be able to erase it once you start. Some wire tag labels come with extra labels that can be applied over the write-on surface in case you mess up or simply want to change your labels later on. Keep in mind that you're going to have limited space to write on the label, so do a couple of dry ones on plain paper and compare this to the labels so that you can figure out how many words fit in each row.

Use a ballpoint pen mark the write-on section of the label (or the separate label, which is then applied over the write-on surface). Let the ink dry for at least five minutes, then rub lightly with your finger to make sure it won't smudge off. If it does smudge off, you'll have to use a permanent marker to write on the tag.
