How to Make Smoke Effect in Flash 8
Flash videos are found throughout the Internet because they are designed to use very few computer and network resources. A Flash video can look the same as a conventional video, yet it allows for complex animations to be created with a very small learning curve. This makes it a good choice for those looking to create animation effects in a minimal amount of time. Creating a smoke special effect in Flash 8 can be done within a hour, with results that look very professional.

Run the Flash 8 software. Go to the "File" menu and open a Flash document. Select the "Brush" tool. Turn off the "Stroke" color. Select "Grey" as the color from the "Color Palette".
Draw a smoke shape onto the flash document.

Select the "Eraser" tool and create thin lines inside of the smoke shape to represent wisps of smoke. Select the shape and press the F8 key. Choose "Movie clip" from the pop-up menu.
Go to the "Properties" menu and select the "Filters" tab on the left side. Click on the "+" icon and select "Blur" from the drop down menu. Set the X and Y parameters for "Blur" to 33. Close the window.

Draw another smoke shape next to the first one and repeat the steps to make it look like the first one.
Select both smoke shapes and press F8. Select "Movie clip" from the pop-up menu. Double-click on the "Movie clip" window covering the two smoke shapes and right-click to select "Edit in place" from the pop-up menu.

Press Control+Shift+D on the keyboard to bring up the "Timeline" menu. Highlight layer one and delete it by pressing the "Delete" key on the keyboard. Highlight "Layer 1" and move the smoke shape that is now highlighted in the Flash document to the position where you would like to the smoke to be. Move to the fifth frame on the "Timeline" and press the F6 key. Move the smoke shape on the Flash document up a little. Click Control+F3 to open the "Properties" panel and choose "Alpha" as the color and move the percentage down to 45%. Go back to the first frame and repeat the process and set the "Alpha" to 0%.

Click on the tenth layer of the smoke shape and press the F6 key. Move the smoke shape up a little bit. Bring up the "Properties" panel again and select "Alpha" and set the percentage to 73%. Click on the fifth frame of animation and repeat the process with the percentage set to 0%.

Take the "Selection" tool and click on the smoke layer to select it. Press F8 to bring up the "Properties" panel and select "Tween" for Motion. Make another smoke shape in the same way as it was done before but make the changes to it starting with Frame 15.

Press Control+Enter to return to the main screen of the Flash program. Go to the "File" menu and save the smoke animation that has been created.

Tips & Warnings
Saving the work in progress will enable you to return to an earlier stage should you make a mistake.
There is always the chance of a file getting corrupted when it is saved over and over again. A copy of the file should be put away so that it can be accessed if there is a problem.
