Many gardeners are choosing rubber mulch for landscaping flower beds and other growing areas. Rubber mulch is an affordable option and stays attractive for many years. Rubber mulch comes in a variety of colors, ranging from muted to striking shades. Rubber mulch also serves all of the purposes required of mulch, including insulating the soil, retaining soil moisture and controlling weeds. Additionally, rubber mulch has the added benefit of being heavy enough that it will not blow away under windy conditions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Landscape fabric
  • Scissors
  • Landscape fabric tacks
  • Tape measure
  • Rubber mulch
  • Rake
  1. Step 1

Measure the length and width of the landscaping area in inches. Multiply the length and width measurements together to arrive at the area. Convert the area to square feet by dividing by 12. Purchase approximately 4 lb. of rubber mulch to cover 1 square foot with 2 inches of mulch.

  2. Step 2

Cut and lay down the landscape fabric over the growing area to create a barrier to prevent weeds. Overlap the pieces of landscape fabric by approximately 1 inch and secure them with tacks. Cut holes for existing plants or flowers and arrange the landscape fabric carefully around plants.

  3. Step 3

Pour the rubber mulch over the landscape fabric. Spread the mulch carefully around plants with the rake, making sure it is even and all of the surfaces of the growing area have an even layer of rubber mulch.
